1. More Than 600 Varieties!
What? Yes, you heard us right! It’s uncanny and difficult to believe but yes pasta is available in more than 600 varieties around the world. Pasta is enjoyed as a staple food in many countries and that’s why pasta suppliers in India and around the world produce their own variations of pasta loved in their respective regions the most. Also, pasta has around 1300 names with over 600 varieties in the world. That’s some massive love for pasta, right?
2. It Originated In China!
As shocking as this sounds, it is true. While pasta is widely considered as an Italian food of Italian origin however it is believed to be discovered in China around 5000 BC. It is believed to be discovered by Marco Polo in China, from there it travelled and came to Italy.
3. Tomatoes Were Introduced Much Later
While this classic combination of Pasta and Tomatoes is widely loved, it is not that retro. People starting experimenting with pasta with tomatoes when it was brought to the European countries from Mexico in 1519. Since then till now, pasta and tomatoes go hand in hand.
4. Macaroni Wasn’t a Pasta
Before the 80’s, macaroni was not categorized as pasta. It was rather enjoyed as a ‘blue-collar’ down home meal. However as and when times changed, people started calling it like pasta. Over the time, Macaroni became one of the most favourite pastas in the world.
5. The Science behind Every Shape!
You must have heard that pasta is available in various shapes as they are pretty to look at. Different shapes provide treat to the eyes and all. However, there’s more behind the various varieties of pasta. Each shape is made for some reason and purpose. For e.g., thin pasta strands are good for thin sauces and shell-shaped pasta holds thick sauces well etc.
6. Herculean Consumption in Italy!
As expected, Italians consume the greatest amount of pasta in the world. It is estimated that an average Italian consumes up to 26 kg pasta annually. Venezuela and Tunisia take up the second and the third spot.
